    Sobre a obraAbout the work

Reconquista altera a direção desse olhar.

    A inversão é deliberada.

For centuries, native peoples were represented through the gaze of those who arrived on their territories.

They were observed, classified, named, described and turned into objects of a historical narrative built by others.

Reconquista shifts the direction of that gaze.

In the work, the indigenous figure takes on one of modernity’s most powerful archetypes: the astronaut. More than a character associated with technology, the astronaut represents the one who sets out toward the unknown — crossing borders, exploring territories, expanding the limits of the known world.

Here, however, the one wearing the helmet belongs precisely to the peoples who, for centuries, were placed in the position of the “discovered.”

    The inversion is deliberate.

Once called discovered, they now set out to discover.

The space helmet and the ancestral elements do not appear as contradictory forces. One does not replace the other. There is no need to abandon an identity to occupy the future.

That is why the “reconquest” of the title is not only about territory.

It also happens on the symbolic field.

It is a reconquest of the capacity to explore, narrate, imagine and occupy what does not yet exist.

The work silently asks who, throughout history, was granted the right to build the images of tomorrow — and what happens when those traditionally confined to the past come to occupy the center of the narratives of the future.
